Menopause and Weight Gain

One of the typical symptoms of menopause is the weight gain and the change of your body shape. Almost 90% of women at the age between 35 and 50 gain extra weight, which can vary from 5 to 20 pounds and even more. At the same time the change in the body shape is quite visible.

The extra weight goes to your abdomen much more than around the hips and thighs (which is typical for the younger women). You move from your traditional “pear shape” to the new “apple shape”, which is distinguished by the round stomach area and the increased waist measurement. Herbal supplements can help for weight gain during the menopause.

You have to know that this situation is not your fault. It is normal to be shocked noticing the extra pounds on your body and to be even frustrated. Probably you have the same activity and eating habits as before, but your waistline and weight increase. You can hardly stop this process that runs with the bodies of so many women.

Even you exercise more and eat less, loosing weight is very hard; even when it happens, you cannot maintain it for longer time. However, do not blame yourself, your fluctuating hormones are the cause of this entire situation.

During the menopause the hormones in your body influence directly all factors, related with the body weight gain: your appetite, the metabolism processes and the process of fat storage.

The estrogen is the “female” hormone, which causes the monthly ovulation. Its levels significantly decrease in the menopausal period in order to stop the ovulation and the possible pregnancy. However, the body looks for other sources to provide the usual hormone levels. The fat cells actually can produce small amount of estrogen. Therefore the body takes measures to increase the number of fat cells, working hard in converting the energy you supply through the food into fat.

Progesterone levels decrease as well and they provoke the typical for the menopause water retention and bloating. Therefore it is also responsible for the weight gain. At the same time the higher levels of the androgen hormone provoke the placement of the extra pounds on the middle section of your body. This is the reason your body shape transforms into the typical for male bodies “apple” shape: more fat areas placed around the waistline.

The process of gaining extra weight is supported actively by the testosterone as well. In the menopausal years its levels significantly drop, which results in losing muscle mass. The muscles are the zones in the body where the fat and the energy is burned effectively. Losing the muscles your metabolism slows down and the result is again weight gain.

Other factors that strongly influence your body weight after the age of 40 are the insulin levels and the stress. Insulin resistance is very typical for the menopausal period. It is characterized by the transformation of every calorie you introduce in your body into fat. This is a process, done by your body by mistake due to the insufficient insulin levels.

A lot of women usually follow low fat diet, which is rich in carbohydrates. The menopausal period is the time to cut off all refined foods. On the other side, when you try to change your diet, decreasing the calories, the stress hormones give signals to the body to slow down the metabolism. This is a natural action when the organism is subject to the risk of starvation. Thus, the stress hormones contribute effectively in adding new extra pounds.

One of the ways to fight against the extra weight is to watch your plate and calories intake. Start a balanced diet, which involves low fat proteins (fish and chicken meat), plenty of vegetables and fruits. Forget about refined sugars and avoid as much as possible carbohydrates in foods with flour (bread, pasta). Try to supply carbohydrates to your body only via fresh fruits.

However, you have to avoid every crash diet. As it was already explained the starvation mode will only decrease the metabolism levels and you don’t need this. The result will be more weight gain after words and increased risk of developing osteoporosis when a large amount of weight is lost in a short time. You may add “health” to your body and improve other menopause related symptoms by stopping smoking and limiting the caffeine and alcohol intake.

But this is not enough. You have to think about dietary supplements, which can help your body to burn fats more effectively, through increasing the metabolic activity and suppressing the natural changes in the hormone levels.
