Life As an Overweight Teen

by Brittany
(Michigan)

The question for me isn't have I tried to lose weight, but how many times have I tried to lose weight. I grow up a chubby child. My family has a long history of being thin. Which isn't easy to lose weight when your family doesn’t mind their weight.

I have tried all types of ways to lose weight. From stealing diet pills from my mom, and almost dying as a cause of that, to joining sports teams at school. I have even starved myself for months another near death experience. But nothing seems to work for me.

It is hard for me to go places with my family or to be with my family at all cause I just don't feel comfortable around them. My grandma would tell me she wished I was more like my sister. That she wished that I wasn't a fat girl.

There are even times when my own mother wouldn't invite me to dinner with the rest of the family cause, well I think she's embarrassed to be seen with me. She is thin my step dad is thin and all of my siblings are thin. I feel like the elephant in the room.

In two years my mom and step dad were going to get married again. I want to lose weight so I could look nice for the wedding. But lately I’ve gained 20lbs. It is disappointing to me. And to make matters worse I can't fit into the bridesmaid's dress.

So to answer the question have I tried to lose weight, yes and for once I want to find a diet plan or an exercise work out that will actually work for me. I don't want to be the family embarrassment. Please help me.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having these problems with your family. You would assume that they would be your backbone in your journey. Now from what I see, all you have tried to do is to kill yourself and sweetheart there is so much in life to live for that you wouldn't imagine.

First of all you shouldn't be taking diet pills unless otherwise recommended by a doc. And starving yourself will only get you stuck in a hospital or worse, but it won't help your weight. Secondly, what you need is to get a good diet going. Eat healthy, fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein, etc... No greasy or junk food.

If you eat healthy you can eat at least 5 times a day and keep full rather than eating 3 really full meals. Also try and stick to a workout routine. Just because you don't see the difference in a week or two it doesn't mean that it isn't working.

It just means it's taking care of what's inside before you can actually see a change on the outside. Don't ever let no one talk down to you because people that do are only trying to make themselves feel better by making you feel bad. Next time your grandmother tells you she wishes you were more like your sister, let her know that unless you she gets you a membership to the gym and gets you a personal trainer to not say anything at all because she's not really helping the matter.

Really look into this honey, try to get help from a doctor, a counselor, or someone you trust because my niece is 7 and weighs about 120 pds( which is only 30 pds less than me and i'm 5'9 and 25 yrs old) and I'm scared for her life and my goddaughter is 13 and weighs as much as I do and is half my size and has diabetes. So please look after yourself! God bless.
