Is it bad to work out early in the morning?

by Tess
(Sharpsburg, Georgia.)

I stay up till 1 or 2 working out, but throughout the day, I’m busy.

I have school 8 am to 3:30 pm. At lunch time I eat a salad, but I don’t eat breakfast.
Is that bad to not eat breakfast, or should I have a yogurt, or something like fruit or veggies?

After the school bell rings, then I have soccer practice 3:30 to 5:30. Which is laps (app. a mile), stretches, drills, and then a scrimmage.

And some days, like 2 days a week, I have a game and that’s 4:30 to 6pm, but the coach doesn’t play me full time.

But when I get home I’m still tired, so I go to sleep. Then wake up at 10 or so, get on the computer till 12, when everyone is asleep, and then I start doing my workout routines I come up with and write down. That I do every night.

So would it be bad to exercise at 1am?

Answer

Hi Tess,

I see from your letter that you are very sporty person. I like very much your enthusiasm and want to borrow some from you lol.

Right to your question – no, it is not bad to workout at any time and you can do it when it best fits to your schedule.

The only constraint I see is that after exercises your mind is too excited and you can feel difficulty to go sleep. But if you feel good to exercise late in the night it is ok.

About your eating – it is good to have some breakfast, even something very small – yoghurt or an apple or a small bowl of oats. For lunch you need some protein food and vitamins which could be a steak and fresh salad or eggs and salad.

You exercise a lot and your body needs calories in order to have energy to workout. So, it is very important to eat enough. I think you have more than enough workout and school drills so you don’t have to worry about gaining weight and you can afford yourself to eat normal, without limiting calories.

I have a question: Are you trying to lose weight? If so, you are on the right track with so many workouts, just eat 4-5 times per day only good food – baked or boil meat and fish, vegetables, salads, fruits, nuts, oats, whole grain bread.

If I miss something, please write to me again with more details about your eating and the way you do exercises.

Wish you all the best,

Rumi
