Are You an Indian Lady?
Want to Help You Find Out the Fastest Way to Lose Weight Following Indian Diet and Exercises Especially Developed for Indian Women?

I know many of my readers are Indian women and you have special food and exercise needs.

Many of foods available in USA and other countries are not available in India.

Indian food habits are different and Indian women need special diet and exercise to lose weight.

I’m constantly getting emails from Indian women to help them with diet and exercise. What I see is that the main problem is in the foods Indian women eat and the wrong exercises you do.

I want to create a short ebook with tips “How Indian Women to Lose weight”

I have ideas what to include in the book, but want to be sure that this book will not lose your time (and mine).

So, please USE THE COMMENTS below to answer some of the questions bellow (or all of them), or write about any challenge you met in your weight loss journey.

Please comment ONLY if you are an Indian woman !!!

Helpful questions what YOU want me to write about:

Please, use your own words and tell me where you want help, what makes you overwhelmed.

1. Your weight, height and age.

2. What EXERCISES you need – tell me which the most problematic body spots are?

3. Do you want me to record home exercise videos? How long to be (what time per day you can spend doing exercises)? Which body parts to target?

4. What is the biggest challenge when you start exercising? Do you exercise at home or gym or which of them you prefer?

5. What you eat is very important: describe your diet challenges, give examples what you eat. Tell me do you have time to cook (10 mins per day, 1 hour?), so I know what kind of food ideas to give you. Please be very descriptive, I need to know what and how much you eat or I can not help you.

7. I spent and will spend many hours in this project and I think it is fair to ask for a fee for this Indian diet and exercise. But I want everybody can afford the fee, so tell me how much you are ready to spend on 1 month personalized Indian diet and exercise plan that will help you to lose kilos quick and easy. I want to make this very very easy and as quick as possible, so you look good fast!

6. Anything you want to share.

Weight loss July 31, 2010 at 8:48 am

Hi, I am Vanita, age 25, height 5’1” and weight 56 kgs.

I want to reduce weight around my tummy, thighs and hips. These are the main problem areas for most of the indian women.

Usually i get about 15 to 30 minutes for exercise either in morning or evening.

I would prefer workout videos of about this lenght.

Usually, people in india are used to foods that are high in oil and spices. My diet is also the same.

However, I dont like sweets. and i am a vegan. I have 3 to 4 meals a day.

I want to know how to stop craving for food.
Most of the indian women prefer working out at home as they do not get time for gymming. it is very difficult to juggle your work and home.

I would like if you include some health indian recipies that help to control weight.

I would not mind paying 1000 to 1500 Rs for this diet and exercise plan exclusively designed for indian women.

Thank you.

know about weight loss

me, myself and family by: Madhuri July 31, 2010 at 8:52 am

Weight: 60kg
Height: 5’3″
Age: 32

Problem Areas: arms and tummy (have 2 kids)

Home exercise videos will help. But I have also joined an exercise club – which equipment in which order and routine suggestions – would be of greater value to me. I plan to workout about 45 mins – 3 times a week.

Biggest challenge is where to start. the routine of what to do is not defined.

I am from Andhra but bought up in Delhi – loves food – can control my meal intake except for desserts.
What I need is a simple diet plan with Indian suggestions. I can spend about 20 mins on breakfast, am WORKING – so lunch and dinner generally need to be the same or leftovers. Time available would be between 40 mins to 1 hour. This includes cleaning up after myself. My husband and kids (2 boys – 4 and 6 year olds) love spicy foods. We eat home-cooked food (includes breakfast/lunch/dinner) most days except 2 dinners a week. Half a year my in-laws stay with us (FYI).

Expense: Rs 200-500. Because this is the internet – I am assuming that you are organized (have already got lists of sorted information to help all) and many clients.

Weight reducing, but at a very slow pace by: MR July 31, 2010 at 8:55 am

1. Your weight, height and age.
–73 kgs, 5’4″ and 29 yrs of age

2. What EXERCISES you need – tell me which the most problematic body spots are?
–Need to reduce fat from everywhere except my face :) . Mainly arms, abs and thighs.

3. Do you want me to record home exercise videos? How long to be (what time per day you can spend doing exercises)? Which body parts to target?
I do your videos 5 to 6 days a week. I can spend upto an hour a day. I target my arms, abs and thighs.

4. What is the biggest challenge when you start exercising? Do you exercise at home or gym or which of them you prefer?
I used to go to gym, but with a 2-yr old son around, it has become difficult and so for past 6 months I exercise at home. All I do is your videos. Thanks to them, I have come down from 76 kg to 73 kg, though it took me more time, 6 months. My biggest challenge would be keeping a separate diet for me. I cook for my husband and son separately, all fatty items for my son. I share whatever I cook for my husband, but in moderate quantities.

5. What you eat is very important: describe your diet challenges, give examples what you eat. Tell me do you have time to cook (10 mins per day, 1 hour?), so I know what kind of food ideas to give you. Please be very descriptive, I need to know what and how much you eat or I can not help you.
I can cook for 2 hours a day
At 6 AM – 3/4 cup tea, with milk and sugar. Can’t think of black tea at all since I’m not used to it.
8 AM – A Small banana
9 AM – Workout for 1 hr
10.30 – 1 cup mango mashed. no sugar
1.30 PM – 1 dosa or 2 chappattis + 1/2 bowl mix veg curry
4.00 PM – 1/2 cup tea + 1 hide n seek biscuit
6 PM – 1/2 cup tea again
9 PM – 1 or 2 chappattis + chicken dry roast in oven or sprouuts curry or mix veg curry+ veg salad – 1/2 cup
10.30 – 1 cup hot milk with 1 tsp sugar

Yoga and Pilates Combination July 31, 2010 at 9:09 am

Please find a Yoga and Pilates class in your area. Pilates focuses on your core muscle groups i.e. abs, glutes, thighs. It strenghtens your back and stretches those hamstrings, both of which are important as you grow older. The toning it gives to the stomach area is unbelievable.

Accompanied by Yoga, for increased flexibility and you’re on your way to a very healthy you!

I am an Indian women and have found these two classes exceptional for both losing weight and toning your body.

Offcourse I did change my eating habits as well i.e. more fruit/veg and high-fibre foods. Only olive oil in my cooking, and a little of it. If you are not a vegetarian, only white meat i.e. fish and chicken is allowed. No red meat.
Remember 5 tiny meals, are better than 2 big meals. That is key.

So Indian woman, please do exactly this. It has really worked for me :)

The weight did not reduce much after my pregnancy. only 2 or 3 kgs reduced and I practiced your workout routine which reduced to other 3 kgs. Now I do not get time to practice your workout and the weight remains constant.

I am confused what diet has to be followed. I stopped to take non-veg but not even a single kg dropped.
Since I have got an attack of chikunguniya I am not practicing any exercise now.
Let em answer your Qns.

2. The problematic spots are my thighs, abs and arms.

3. Home exercise is better for me. I can spend about 1 hour.

4. I have problem in continuing the exercises. It would be better if you provide with a different exercise plans in weekdays and weekends to be followed rather than doing same exercise everyday.

5. I have coffee at about 8 am and breakfast of 3 to 4 idlies or thosai at 10 am. For lunch I used have rice of 2 cups and curry made of dals, vegetables and masalas and have some vegetables as side dish. Evening again 1 cup of coffee and at night rice of 2 cups and curry. Please let me know how can i improve my diet. I have about 1 hr to cook.

6.It should not be problem.

Diet and excercise July 31, 2010 at 9:18 am

Yes it works. Exercise for 45 minutes everday and quit foods that use white flour e.g. Pasta, rotis, white bread etc. Eat more protein and less carb. Carbs must be natural e.g potatoes. No refined carbs. Stop eating after 7pm. Do this for 2 months at least and u will lose weight drastically. Keep doing this until u reach your goal weight. Once reached, keep doing the exercise, and eat whatever u want. Your body weight will stabilize, and u wont gain weight. Just dont overeat. Pilates is a great form of exercise to give u that dancers body !

customize my diet and workout plan by: Mala July 31, 2010 at 9:19 am

Hi Rumi,
I am an Indian home maker, 60 years of age, vegetarian (south Indian) by diet, current weight 75kgs,5’4″ height, currently suffering from slight pain in the lower back.
My main problem area is abdomen which is more like a pot-belly developed after c-section for child-birth (have only one son) and then hysterectomy.
I have tried yoga (for few months)for weight loss without any success. Currently walk at moderate pace for about 30-40 minutes.(not able to do brisk walking due to overweight). Every time I begin a workout routine, I encounter some kind of sickness, and am forced to discontinue. Thus lose the motivation to pick up the routine.
Generally skip breakfast except for a cup of coffee. Being a south-indian, eat rice 2-3 days (both times) a week, chapatis(made from wheat flour)2-3 days a week and the other 2 days it is generally some south-indian snack such as upma (made from cream of wheat), dosas(indian pan-cakes), idlis (steam-cooked) etc.

I am also suffering from insomnia, so request you to kindly advise on all aspects to achieve success in all the areas.

In the meantime, I am going to try your ‘whole body workout’ routine…as many of exercises I can do, if not all 8 of them…and hope for the best.

Many thanks
Love
Mala

I am 34 years old, am 5.4 feet tall and weigh 60 kgs so I am in general good health but my major concern is my abdomen area and thighs. I think this would be a problem for nearly all women..I’ve tried hard to reduce weight and tone up my thighs but it hasn’t helped much. I’d be grateful if you could design some exercise routine that would target thighs and abdomen area together.
Thanks.

Looking for good weight reduction plan July 31, 2010 at 9:33 am

Hi Rumi, I am giving you my details. Hope it will be helpful for you in planning diet and exercise plan for Indian women. Thanks for your good work. Keep it up!

1. Your weight, height and age- Weight 61Kg, 5’1”, 25years.

2. What EXERCISES you need – tell me which the most problematic body spots are? – I am looking for whole body workout but most problematic areas as of now are tummy and arms.

3. Do you want me to record home exercise videos? How long to be (what time per day you can spend doing exercises)? Which body parts to target? – I want home exercise videos , and I can spend 45 minutes to 1 hour for exercise from 4-5 days in a week as I am working and my work schedule is very hectic.

4. What is the biggest challenge when you start exercising? Do you exercise at home or gym or which of them you prefer? – Biggest challenge is waking up early in the morning as I usually come late from work and am too tired to wake up early. I would prefer exercise at home.

5. What you eat is very important: describe your diet challenges, give examples what you eat. Tell me do you have time to cook (10 mins per day, 1 hour?), so I know what kind of food ideas to give you. Please be very descriptive, I need to know what and how much you eat or I can not help you. -I have 3 main courses in a day – breakfast , lunch and dinner. In these I usually have vegetarian food that is Indian cereals, vegetables, chapati and curd. I can manage to cook not for more than 30 mins in a day.In evening snacks I end up eating junk food like cheese sandwich, pizzas, burgers or brownies. Plus I cannot resist sweets.I have 4-5 coffee in a day with milk and sugar.

– I m ready to pay from upto Rs 1000 per month for this programme.

6. Anything you want to share – My job consumes most of my day. I am a software engineer so I dont get to walk or do much of physical activity during the day. So it is very important for me to control my diet along with workout to remain in good shape. Plus currently I am not able to do heavy workout I get tired very quickly. Please guide me how can I improve my ability of doing workout.

I am Indian,I am 28 Year Old,height is 5’6″ and my weight is 61 kg.plz give me perfect dight for my bodey

Aparna August 18, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Hii, I am 24 yr old. My weight is 76 kgs and height 5 ft 2 in.

My most problematic areas are bulges around waist line, tummy and flabby tummy. My face and neck seems to be swollen. I can spend only half an hour as I have a busy schedule. I can cook for half an hour at the most.

Biggest challenge would be to continue regularly and I need some motivation on regular basis. I would prefer to exercise at home and can do that for an hour or in two session of half an hour.

Though I eat non veg but as that is not allowed at home so my routine diet somewhat goes like 2 paranthas for breakfast with dahi aur achar, 2 chapati with sabji in lunch, evening tea with one slice of bread and 2 chapati (or one chapati and rice) with sabji and dal. I eat non veg once in a week. I can not go on strict dieting but I can surely replace it with healthy diet on suggestion.

I want to do some yoga to reduce mental stress and exercise for physical workout.

Thank you

Rumi August 18, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Aparna, the issue with Indian nutrition is that you eat only carbohydrates and combine them with fat – you can’t lose weight this way. You need to eat protein and fiber to lose weight. Indian women don’t eat meat and fish so then the only protein source is eggs and curd. Even fruits is carbohydrates and have to avoided during the period you lose weight. Your nutrition should look like this

breakfast – 100 gr. curd and fruit on your choice

lunch – one or two bowls of beans, lentils or peas – cooked only with veggies and without any fat

dinner – lettuce with 200 gr. curd and veggies on your choice (better fresh but boiled veggies is ok too

If you eat eggs, then have 2 boiled eggs per day as a snack between meals.

See, that there are no chappati, rice, potatoes or other food that contain carbohydrates. You can’t lose weight if you eat as you described in your comment and almost all Indian women eat like this and I can’t reach them with the idea that traditional Indian food is too much carbohydrates and fat dense. Hope this helps.

Thank you Rumi for your reply. I totally agree with you that we do have carbohydrates and fat based diet but now that our body is dependent and used to this diet, would it not be very harsh to not intake any chapati or rice. I just wrote in flow but I have eliminated pranthas from breakfast and have included boiled daal (moong daal), corn flakes with milk from last one month. Somebody told me about oat meal, is it a better option? I don’t eat fried food or don’t use much oil to prepare vegetables. I might sound rigid but it is just not possible to sustain on a diet that you told me, watching everybody at home and at office eating cooked food.

I would also be thankful if you could answer another query of mine that I posted in “Ask Questions” section as this page seems to be focused on your project.

Aparna, the reason I don’t like to give advise to Indian women is because I give them what to do and then they say “O, this is not for me ..” Actually your body is not so used to chapatti and rice and you can give them up and you will be ok. I don’t know Indian foods and I need to check every time, like moong dal is 56% carbs but it has 24% protein, so it is good food. Corn flakes can be good or bad, depending on the brand, some times they have added sugar, I would not eat them. Oat meal is also mainly carbs but it contains fiber, so these are good carbs but you need to eat it moderately, like 3-4 spoons of oats with skimmed milk in the morning. People underestimate the fat they use, for example if you have just 50 ml of fat to prepare veggies, this is 450 calories which is enough calorie for a meal and you don’t need to eat anything else. Most women need 1500 calories per day and if you eat food prepared with fat 3 times per day, most probably you gain all your necessary calories from fat and all additional food is added like stored fat to your body. It is better to measure fat (virgin olive oil) with spoons and eat no more than 3 spoon per day. Don’t watch people when they eat :) After you lose weight, they will watch you ;)

haha true.. I will try to stick to what you have suggested though I am facing a lot of opposition after telling my family about this diet. Even my family doctor wasn’t my favor to it (though he asked me to rather consult a dietician). I know most of Indian woman just submit before, even without trying it but I guess I will try it for a week initially and see if I can maintain it. Hope for the best :)

Thanks a lot Rumi !!

P.S. I thought you are an Indian or know well about indian food, thats why I used all such terms. Thanks for all your help and best wishes for your project

Aparna, please report after a week how you feel. I am sure about the results, but words from Indian woman may convince other Indian women to start eat healthy.

Just one more query.. Some days back I again started exercising i.e running, jogging and some exercises to reduce weight and hence to get back in shape. I go to nearby park around 8pm and spend 1 hour there. Now, I feel that I dont have any stamina and get tired very easily say I can not run more than 100mts in a single go. Generally my first lap is of 200mts and then it starts decreasing. It really hurts my back and especially neck-shoulder area and that is the main reason that I am not able to continue it. I usually jog then walk and then again jog. I guess I cover almost 3kms (jogging + walking + running). So is it ok to do this exercise with this diet. And moreover I want to include exercise in my schedule on long term because of health reasons so I am trying to find the best match of diet and exercise.
Thank you

Aparna, you will become stronger, just continue run and exercise. Definitely do exercise and diet together.
