Breast feeding and want to lose weight

by Cindy Joe

My new born is 4 months old. I am getting fatter day after day. I want to have a diet, but the problem is that when I try to do so, no milk in my breasts is produced.

May I ask, What type of diet I can follow in order to keep healthy and breast-feed my baby?

Thank you.

Answer from Rumi

Hi Cindy, congrats for your baby. Here is my post pregnancy diet - it is very effective and you can continue to breast feeding and at the same time you will lose weight.

Hope this helps.

Breastfeeding Burns Fat
by: Breastfeeding Mama

Great to see encouragement for breastfeeding while eating a healthy diet. One thing you forgot to mention is that breastfeeding itself burns calories to help lose weight. Here is a quote from the La Leche League website: "Production of milk is an active metabolic process, requiring the use of 200 to 500 calories per day, on average. To use up this many calories, a bottlefeeding mother would have to swim at least 30 laps in a pool or bicycle uphill for an hour daily. Clearly, breastfeeding mothers have an edge on losing weight gained during pregnancy. Studies have confirmed that nonbreastfeeding mothers lose less weight and don't keep it off as well as breastfeeding mothers (Brewer 1989)." It is very important to eat a healthy diet while breastfeeding both for yourself and to ensure that your baby gets all the healthy benefits that you are working so hard for from your milk.
