Black Cohosh and Menopause

Black cohosh is widely used in several products for treatment of menopausal symptoms. As an average the period that precedes the real menopause (perimenopausal period) starts at the age between 40 and 50. Around 50 to 80 percent of women experience one or more symptoms of the menopause: night sweats, hot flashes or difficulties in sleeping.

One of the treatments used by a lot of women is the hormonal therapy. However it cannot be a successful solution for every menopausal symptom. Usually, the hormonal replacement is beneficial for osteoporosis related problems, the vagina dryness, the decrease of blood clots in lungs and legs.

However, there are recent reports in the medical literature that the menopausal therapy based on hormone replacement could lead to an increase risk of cancer and particularly ovarian cancer. The higher estrogen levels may provoke as well problems with breast tumors, though the scientific evidence for this is not quite clear.

Therefore other options for menopause symptoms treatments are searched as alternative of the hormonal replacement. The best and effective alternative is the herbal treatment.

The perennial Cimicifuga Racemosa (Black cohosh) is a tall plant used in different supplements for treatment of menopause related symptoms. Even the medicine of the American Indians used the herb for “female problems”. Nowadays this unique plant is a basic component in different remedies used in Europe and United States for treatment of hot flashes, associated with perimenopausal and menopausal periods.

The plant is very effective in fight against night sweats, mood swings, migraines, vaginal dryness, and heart palpitations. It helps as well in cases of bloating and other menstrual problems.

Recent studies have shown that 56% of women report reduction of menopausal symptoms after taking herbal products with Black cohosh for 4 weeks. The percentage of satisfied women increases to 70 after a treatment period of 3 months. The results of the “placebo” group (women who knew that take the herb, but actually didn’t) were 25% less of satisfied patients.

When take this plant as a component in different remedies or as a single substance you should know that it could interfere with different drugs (like oral contraceptives) or to influence hormonal therapies. The reason is that the herb acts as the estrogen hormone.

There are reports that it can decrease the effectiveness of cisplatin – a drug, applied in chemotherapy. There are a lot of remedies on the market that contain the Black cohosh herb among other plants. They have different other ingredients and effectiveness.
